Assignment: Create a Short Film on a Feminist Issue

Objective: In this assignment, students will work in groups to write a screenplay and record a short film that addresses a feminist issue of their choice. This project encourages collaboration, creativity, and a deep engagement with feminist themes.

Instructions:

  1. Form Groups:
    • Form groups of 3-5 students.
  2. Choose a Feminist Issue:
    • Select a feminist issue that resonates with your group. This could include topics such as gender equality, body positivity, reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ issues, intersectionality, workplace discrimination, or any other topic related to feminist discourse.
  3. Research:
    • Conduct thorough research on your chosen issue to ensure accuracy and depth in your screenplay and film. Use academic sources, news articles, and relevant literature.
  4. Write a Screenplay:
    • Develop a screenplay of 5-7 pages. Ensure that the screenplay includes the following elements:
      • Title page with the title of your film and group members’ names
      • A clear beginning, middle, and end
      • Well-developed characters
      • Dialogue that reflects the chosen issue and themes
      • Stage directions and setting descriptions
  5. Plan and Record the Short Film:
    • Plan the logistics of your film, including locations, props, costumes, and casting.
    • Record your short film, ensuring that it is 5-10 minutes in length.
    • Edit the film to ensure clarity, coherence, and quality.
  6. Presentation:
    • Each group will present their short film to the class on the due date. Be prepared to discuss your chosen issue, the research process, and the creative decisions you made.

Film Quality High-quality recording and editing; clear and coherent. Good quality recording and editing; mostly clear and coherent. Adequate quality recording and editing; somewhat clear and coherent. Poor quality recording and editing; lacks clarity and coherence. Very poor quality recording and editing.
Collaboration & Effort Excellent collaboration and effort from all group members. Good collaboration and effort from most group members. Adequate collaboration and effort from some group members. Minimal collaboration and effort from few group members. Lack of collaboration and effort from group members.
Presentation Engaging and well-prepared presentation with strong explanations. Good presentation with clear explanations. Adequate presentation with some explanations. Poor presentation with minimal explanations. No presentation or very poor presentation.

Submission Instructions:

    • A copy of your screenplay
    • A digital copy of your short film
    • A written reflection (1-2 pages) detailing your group’s process, the research conducted, and the challenges faced.
