Throughout this unit, we have read several texts across a variety of genres and one thing we have discovered is the importance of time and place in defining the female experience.  Like the bumblebee in Adrienne Rich’s “Notes toward a Politics of Location,” the women we’ve read about seem to be hitting the glass in search of a “home” where they belong and feel comfortable.

It is time to explore this theme a bit more deeply through writing.  In a short textual analysis, I want you to summarize and then unpack three short stories of your choice that we have covered in this unit.  Focus in on the theme of finding a home or place of one’s own; this can, of course, mean a physical place but, more often, it is tied to something more psychological.  Consider and explore all definitions and connotations of these terms.

This paper should be 3-4 pages in length.  You may use secondary sources for this project, but they are not required.  You are also welcome to use any of the feminist theory texts from Unit 1 as support (not required).  List all sources you consult for information in your Works Cited.  You MUST cite the primary texts (short stories) you are using.  Use MLA format and parenthetical citation when necessary.

Bring the rough draft of your work-in-progress to class on the due date for workshopping. The final draft must be submitted by 11:59 PM on the due date.
